The cognition system is always activated when the emotion\nsystem cannot handle the situation. This process is usually accompanied by an\nunpleasant feeling; as a consequence, the cognitive system is perceived as\nexhausting and the emotion system is referred to as effortless because we do\nnot notice it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This particular\ncharacteristic of the decision-making systems is one of the reasons why the\ndifferent forms of decision making are so difficult to recognize and understand\nas well as why the discussion about them is often so polarizing. One of the\nmost frequent questions: head or gut? arises from this dynamic, which can be\neasily explained by the inseparability of the decision-making systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who is driving the car? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Swiss psychiatrist Luc\nCiompi has been referring to the working principles in the emotion system as \u2018affect\nlogic\u2019 since 1982. Emotions serve life and move people through life, in that a\ngiven and individually developed emotional logic reacts flexibly to given\nsituations. This is the task that emotions manage and for which evolution has\nshaped them. Emotions have acquired their negative reputation on the one hand\nbecause the feeling of emotions is usually very unpleasant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, emotions\nare classified as negative because they dominate long-term planning and social\nevaluation in emotive-cognitive cycles during higher emotional arousal and\ndeactivate them during extreme arousal. In 1998, Joseph Ledoux called the path via\nthe emotion system the &#8220;low road&#8221; and accordingly, the path via the\ncognitive system the &#8220;high road&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Critics might object that\nthe emotion system may be able to master simple life situations, but not\ncomplex ones. Even driving a car is a complex process. Have you ever driven a\ncar in your mind and &#8220;suddenly&#8221; found yourself at home without\nknowing exactly which way you were driving or without remembering certain routes?\nThe impression imparted of something that was inaccessible and effortless to\nthe conscious mind, such as the carefree drive, is an indication of the emotion\nsystem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The much-cited autopilot is\nyour emotion system, which Daniel Kahneman called System 1 in 1997. The missing\nconscious memory, therefore, indicates merely that the emotion system has acted\nalone. The \u2018lost\u2019 memory is not a magical inexplicable instance. Your emotion\nsystem and the neuronal emotional programs (neP=emotions) processed by this\nsystem are quite capable of handling complex situations. You might say: no, I\nremember. Both this memory and this statement are, of course, true because\nthere have always been situations in which the cognition system has been\nactivated. With these &#8220;learned&#8221; or conditioned neuronal\nemotional programs, the emotion system can act autonomously. As a newcomer to\nroad traffic, in contrast, the nePs have not yet been as well developed, and\nthe processes must still be consciously executed by means of the cognitive\nsystem. The characteristics of the cognitive system can be clearly experienced\nin this learning phase: exhaustingly, slowly, consciously and requiring effort.\nAs a beginner, one has to consciously activate the cognitive system in order to\ninitiate processes such as steering, shifting gears, braking, accelerating,\nobserving traffic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the beginner, the\ncognitive system does the driving while as experienced drivers we have an\nemotion system that is able to drive autonomously. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To answer the introductory\nquestion: Who is driving the car? \u2013 We must conclude that the emotion system\nusually drives but sometimes the cognition system does the driving. As is so\noften the case, we are dealing with the situation in which not only one but\nsometimes both scenarios may apply. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The emotive decision<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The term \u2018autopilot\u2019\ndescribes the character of the emotive decision very well because after the\ndecision has been made, the system goes straight into action. But the word also\nindicates that the actions quality depends largely on the decision. In contrast\nto the logic of affects, the emotions work in the background by means of the\nautopilot. The quality of the emotive decision depends primarily on\nthe experienced knowledge represented in the emotion system.
